Production Deployment of the Oracle Forms and Reports URBANISM applications of The City of Laval

For many years the City of Laval have used the Urbanism applications (117 Forms and 69 Reports) on a Sun Solaris platform in character mode with no use of the mouse. The City of Laval is a vast municipal organisation within the Province of Québec. Many of the applications of the City of Laval were developed with the Oracle database and the Oracle Designer and Developer tools. Given the obsolescence of Oracle Forms 6i support and the desire to rationalise their development environment on Linux with the Oracle database, the City of Laval considered several scenarios, and chose RENAPS with the ORMIT™-Forms solution from Imex Systems Inc. for the all inclusive migration and transformation with a very aggressive commitment.

The choice of the City of Laval was focused from the very beginning of the project on the choice of RENAPS, this was the most important decision they made and a very smart move according to the management of the city.

The project was carried out following the classic approach and process of RENAPS for Ormit™-Forms migration projects, starting with a pilot project that enabled the validation of many delicate technical points right up to the assistance of RENAPS after the deployment.

The collaboration between the City of Laval and RENAPS was exemplary, very dynamic and went well beyond contractual constraints.

This project was a technical challenge for us. The application had to be migrated so that the users saw no difference at all from a functional or performance point of view. The choice of RENAPS Technology was the determining point for this project. Without their technical competencies the challenge would have been much bigger. All risks were covered and the deployment on Monday March 15th 2010 at 13:00 was a complete success. Within the next few weeks, some adjustments that were not part of the mandate will be completed and we plan to deploy in production by the summer. No one would suspect the amount of work and energy invested to simply give the user the illusion that everything looked "like before." Without counting all the functional additions such as partial mouse navigation enablement, trigger modifications, alerts, libraries, data blocks, canvas, reports, visual attributes, colours and item fonts, field labels, etc.

About The City of Laval

The administration of a City the size of Laval which regroups more than 350 000 people necessitates a division of tasks into multiple administrative units. They cover all the spectrum of activities required by law. The Municipal Management committee adopted the creation of 17 offices and services that answer to the General Management.

Our solution having already been deployed with success in multiple projects was applied within the classic context for the City of Laval. The technical challenges of this project were very motivating for our team. Among them was the partial activation of the mouse navigation, and multiple technical particularities associated to our migration services of Oracle Forms 6i to 10g, and all of it via a migration process that was 70% automated. The strong commitment of the City of Laval and their exemplary collaboration was the essential motor for the success of this project
