Oracle Forms migration ROI calculator What moving to open source could save you

Answer six questions and see an indicative 5-year estimate of migrating your Oracle Forms applications to open source with ORMIT™-OpenJava: Oracle support avoided, database, team, upgrades and infrastructure, against an indicative investment range.

Quick estimate

Six answers give a first estimate. Every other figure has a default you can change under “Refine every input”.

The indicative range covers the ORMIT™-OpenJava licence and RENAPS migration services. It is not a quote: an ORMIT™-Analyzer assessment of your code gives a precise figure.

Left blank: the indicative amount for your estate size.

ORMIT™ support is always included: year 1 with the licence, then a yearly amount from year 2, shown in the detailed results.

Prices come from Oracle’s public list prices in US dollars (see “Show Oracle price sources” at the bottom of the page); your contract may differ.

Savings

After the migration the applications run on open-source Java servers, so the annual Oracle support for the Forms & Reports or WebLogic licences that run them is no longer needed.

When the database behind these applications also moves to PostgreSQL, the annual Oracle Database Enterprise Edition support, and that of its options, stops for the processors that served them.

Retiring part of an Oracle support contract can lead Oracle to reprice the licences you keep. RENAPS licensing experts can review your contracts before you decide.

3. Java SE cost due to Forms

Java SE rights are often included with your Oracle middleware: WebLogic licences include a restricted-use Java SE licence, and Oracle’s Java FAQ says customers with current support on an Oracle product that includes Java can use Oracle Java with that product. So many Forms customers pay nothing extra. Enter an amount only for what you pay for Java SE because of your Forms applications.

Your developers keep working on your applications, on the same modern stack as your other systems. You stop paying a premium for scarce Oracle Forms skills and need fewer specialised contractors.

Staying on Oracle Forms means a version upgrade project every few years. After the migration there are no more Forms upgrades to fund; the yearly figure spreads one project over its cycle.

Open-source, stateless applications run in containers on any cloud, without Oracle middleware servers to host. Enter what hosting these applications costs today and the reduction you expect.

Assumptions used

The values behind this estimate. Change the ones marked “Assumption” under “Refine every input”.

Indicative estimate in US dollars, based on Oracle US list prices and the assumptions shown. Not a quote: see “Important” below.

    Method

    How the savings are counted

Six sources of savings, each one you can turn off or set to zero. Oracle costs use Oracle’s public list prices with a generic discount you can change.

    • Oracle Forms & Reports / WebLogic support

Annual support of the middleware licences that run your Forms: list licence × (1 − discount) × 22% support, for your processors or named users, or the amount you actually pay.

    • Oracle Database to PostgreSQL

Annual support of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition and the options you select, for the processors serving these applications, times the share you can retire.

    • Java SE subscription

Zero by default: WebLogic licences include restricted-use Java SE rights, and Oracle gives customers with current support on a product that includes Java access to Oracle Java for that product. Enter only what you pay for Java SE because of Forms.

    • Team, one stack

The premium paid for scarce Forms skills and the specialised contractor spend you no longer need, as percentages you set. Nobody is counted as leaving.

    • No future Forms upgrades

The cost of one Forms upgrade project spread over its cycle.

    • Cloud infrastructure

Your current hosting cost for these applications times the reduction you expect.

    Next step

Turn the range into a precise figure

An ORMIT™-Analyzer assessment inventories your Forms, PL/SQL and dependencies and gives a precise migration estimate. Enter it under “Refine every input” to replace the indicative range.

Annual support = list licence × (1 − discount) × 22%, Oracle’s fixed support rate. Prices marked “not verified” could not be confirmed on an Oracle source when this page was built and are shown for transparency.
